Willem Barentsz was a Dutch navigator determined to
discover the phantomatic “Northeast Passage,” a sea route
all the way to China along the Arctic coasts of Norway and
Russia. An obsession that after various expeditions was
to cost him his life, and which would lead him in 1596—
quite by mistake—to unintentionally discover the remote
archipelago of Svalbard
